The Continuing Chronicles: Terminator 8-Part Featurette Gallery

One day instead of watching an episode in the series, I decided that I wanted to watch the Bonus materials included on the US version of the TSCC (season 2) box set. It wasn't clear from the outside of the DVD slip case (box) which disk to look for the material on. When looking through the colorful and artfully printed episode guide inside the DVD case, the 8-part Featurette gallery is described on the second to last page under the heading special features. It was unclear to me if these special features were in fact on disk 6 (in the DVD version) or on some other disk or were only available through some other special means (like downloading them from the internet or purchasing the Steelbook version from Best Buy).

After looking through all of the disks a fourth time, I recently found the 8-Part Featurette Gallery on disk 6. Of course you have to select "Features" and then your cursor shows up on a line "The Continuing Chronicles:Terminator" <---- that is it.

Your eye is drawn to the bonus commentary tracks for the two episodes on this disk. There are listings of who speaks and on which episode they do it. The Gag Reel also shows up on this Features page but my mind glazed over "The Continuing Chronicles:Terminator" because I was looking for the word featurette or gallery or it didn't occur to me that there was not enough space to spell all of that out on one screen and correctly include the helpful and descriptive information about the DVD commentaries.

Ok, so now our site has a description of where on the box set the featurette gallery is located. I realize that some of them have been posted on YouTube but I really wanted to see the Season 2 War Stories, Motivations and Setting the Tempo featurettes. (continued)

I enjoyed these a lot and I think that the Motivations featurette is the most critical one. Hopefully we can discuss some of what was shown in this thread.

Also, I wanted to say that the DVD packaging is outstanding. The Red and silver embossed foil lettering really twinckles under lights. Even more twinckles happen when you leave the shrink wrap on the box over the dark background. I kept the shrink wrap on to proctect the slip case (box) and the Connor's images from damage from handling or stacking in my collection.

Just a thought but it might be a good video blog topic to have an "unboxing" of one of the seasons. I realize that the timing is off but the season was published in a neat and careful way. Why not boast a little about the attractive exterior that our show got when it was shipped out to media stores everywhere?

Ok, whew, got to spew out some of what I was thinking about over the past couple days. Feel free to add something if it comes to mind.

I watched the War Stories and Motivations featurettes again last night. It's difficult for me to break up what was said and make a post about them right now.

The Setting the Tempo featurette has a look inside Bear McCreary's recording studio. We get to see Shirley record a raw version of the Sampson and Delilah vocals from the official TV soundtrack. :)

In War Stories, Lena said that she was really impressed with the scripts for season 2, going on to say that she thought that there might be seven units required to film her character during the course of one day. Garret talks about how it is not such an easy task to hoist Richard T. Jone's Terminator replacement over his shoulder as if he had robot strength too. Now that I think about it, I'm thinking that season 2 continued the fast paced tempo we saw in the pilot episode, except they turned it up a notch. :)

Anyways, I just watched this video from IGN at the August 2008 Comic-con. I thought it was timely for this part of the summer. Josh Friedman, Garret Dillahunt, Shirley,Thomas and Summer discuss some of the process for Season 2 before all of the episodes are completed.

Brian speaks about the $,$$,$$ that the network gave to the show and the impressive sets that were built on the sound stage.

More about the featurettes. On the Season 2 DVD set, James Middleton and Mr Lima talk about getting everything right for The Terminator. The actors were helped with their performances with Mr. Lima's story boards. I'm glad that they delivered the episodes with a consistant voice and imagry.

Motivations made some key points.

One theme was that the Connors always have to make sacrifices for their mission of stopping Skynet. And death must always seem present with them, an ever-present danger.

And Josh said Riley was viewed as a "rebound girl" for John after Cameron. John had "sublimated" desires for Cameron that he could find release for in Riley.

[edit add: Josh's comment caused me to have a very strange thought here -- that John and Cameron were sleeping together in Season 1 because Cameron wanted to have more control of John, but she dumped him after he replaced her chip in Samson and Delilah because she realized his love for her made him take this inappropriate risk. Because she dumped him, he behaved so churlishly toward her for the rest of Season 2. Thus, Riley truly was a "rebound girl." lol]

Lena said John had been protected and controlled by Sarah all along, and he needed to "step up" to his ultimate responsibilities as he approaches adulthood, and this was supposed to start happening in Season 2.

It's interesting to see all the aspects that the showmakers were thinking about as they crafted the episodes.
