U.S. Cyber Command: Waging War In The World’s Fifth Battlespace

n May 21 U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced the activation of the Pentagon’s first computer command. And the world’s first comprehensive, multi-service military cyber operation.

U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM), initially approved on June 23, 2009, attained the status of what the Pentagon calls initial operations capability eleven months afterward. It is to be fully operational later this year.

CYBERCOM is based at Fort Meade, Maryland, which also is home to the National Security Agency (NSA). The head of the NSA and the related Central Security Service is Keith Alexander, U.S. Army lieutenant general on the morning of May 21 but promoted to four-star general before the formal launching of Cyber Command later in the day so as to become its commander...

Defending both civilian and military computers againsr cyber attacks is quite necessary. The problem with cyber attacks, they can be launched from any server in any location in the world and not necessarily be from the nation that is attacking. When Russia invaded the former Soviet state and now independent country of Georgia, it launched a cyber attack first. The greater part of the cyber attack came from a server in Brooklyn, New York. This I learned last week on Charlie Rose. The military needs to be mandated to not only protect military computers but civilian computers from cyberwarfare. They shouldn't be policing activity, that is for law enforcement, but they should protect our nations servers from attacks that could bring irreparable harm to our banks, corporations, government agencies, police forces around the nation, universities, etc.

Now tie this into research taking place in other places as discussed here:
http://sarahconnor.wetpaint.com/thread/3670723/US+Air+Force+building+their+own+Skynet%3F+Nah..

and this news article:

And is it any wonder we could see the possibility of a real Sky Net? The only thing we have to ask ourselves, are we the only ones doing this? and will an apocalyptic age be brought about by an ambitious attempt to place our defense system in the hands of an AI. Scientists still claim we are a decade or more away from a an AI with the intelligence equal of our own. But all it takes is one smart kid to see beyond the current limitations and come up with a new way of developing an AI.

Sarah Connor is right, "There is no fate, but what we make for ourselves."
