John Connor
Aug 8 2009, 5:56 PM EDT
I loved the first series of T-TSCC. And the second season was great. However, Sarah Connor teaches John Connor that all he must run. HOW IS THAT GOING TO HELP HIM WHEN HE IS THE LEADER OF THE RESISTANCE! He must fight. If there is a third season I think John needs to become a man and stop crying about the death of Derek.

Sarah always wants him to run so that he'll survive long enough to be John Connor. Derek was his uncle, friend, and a father figure during the series...you would just "suck it up" and not care if a person like that in your life died?

And of course John does have to retreat and watch what he does because if he dies there is no resistance. But then SE2's last episode leaves lots of questions because in that time frame when john goes though time he isn't the resistance leader. Derek was family, he was also a good soldier, Derek was the closest thing to a father figure John had so what do you expect. Do you find this valuable? |

I always thought there were multiple goals. For Sarah, keeping John alive is a key goal. If John is to lead the post-Judgment Day Resistance successfully, he needs to stay alive until then. She teaches him to run away from fights where the odds are stacked against him. I don't have a problem with that; it's probably the smart thing to do. For Sarah, destroying Skynet and preventing Judgment Day is another goal. She would like to pursue this while keeping John out of danger as much as possible. We have seen that Skynet can have many faces and that Judgment Day is hard to prevent. Even if Sarah destroys one Skynet predecessor, the chances are that another one will rise to take its place. So even if she destroys a Skynet predecessor, there can be terminators and assassins on the loose hunting for her John. And Judgment Day could still happen. So John needs to be taught how to stay alive. John needs to learn how to fight Skynet, so he can succeed as a leader, post-Judgment Day. Only toward the end of Season 2 have we seen him start to develop leadership attributes. But he is still young, and Judgment Day looks to be some time away. Perhaps we would have seen him become even more of a leader in Season 3, had there been a Season 3. Both Sarah and John place a very high value on human life. More akin to our real life general society than the typical TV or movie heroes, who often seem to go around shooting people. (James Bond, for example) Derek was a good soldier, a close relative, and someone who knew the situation. While Derek was not the perfect uncle, there is no question John really liked him. Losing him hurt. I don't begrudge John his sadness and mourning. For me, it just wouldn't be credible if John just shook it off and forgot about Derek. Do you find this valuable? |

Sarah's goal through John's childhood was to prepare him to become a future leader. But I think that ever since she had the dreams of Judgement Day, her primary goal became to stop it. So the goal of preparing him becomes a lot less important. Sarah hopes now that he'll never have to become that leader. And yes, she teaches him that he must run. But I think the lesson is that he must be careful about fighting before the time comes. That's kind of covered in Season 1 when he wants to save the cheerleader, but can't because it puts him at risk. I kinda wish that there was a scene where either Sarah or Cameron tried to reassure him that his time would come when he would save everyone. Interestingly enough, Cameron was always intended to be the one to break up that Mother-son relationship, and drive John to independence. She did just that, but perhaps not the way we expected. In the beginning of the series he was scared, and didn't think he could become this great hero. Then he had a chance to be a hero by stopping the suicide, but Cameron prevented it. By denying him the chance to be a hero, she increased his desire to become one. Was that her intention, no I doubt it. As for John crying about Derek, Cameron said that General Connor knows what it's like to lose the people he loves. He probably cries for them, though he never shows it. And if John didn't grieve for the people that he loved, then he probaby wouldn't be too effective as a leader. The people that he cares about show him that humanity is worth fighting for. John knows how to make Terminator reboot, use fire arms and how to run if necessary. She did a great job with the essentials, except for one thing. How to be mentally prepared for his future. He can't learn that from Sarah because she's unwilling to accept his fate. This is why she chooses to try and stop Judgment Day.

Not to dismiss Mr. Furlong’s performance in T2 but the character of John Connor was always abstract to me until I watched T:SCC. Mr. Dekker brought the character alive, all abstractions blown aside. (That kid will win an Oscar someday if he continues to act.) In S1, he’s a scared kid who is “not a messiah” and begs his mom to stop it. (I’d imagine J-day is inevitable based on S2’s finale) His mom agrees and off they go; along the way we see the growth of JC through to S1’s finale: his compassion for the suicidal girl; his abiding love for his mother even when he finds out she was ready to give him up; his clarity regarding Cameron “the only way I’m reassured by that is that in the core of your chip you’re just like him”; his love and trust for Charlie; and his newfound relationship with Derek. In S2, there is a distinct change in his personality. I’d imagine killing someone would do that. JC starts making real decisions that affect everyone around him. He also realizes that his mom can’t protect him either. He killed Sarkissian, not Sarah. He tells her, “we’re not murders; you’re not.” He evades Cromartie without anyone’s help at the pier. While all of them including Cameron go off the rails, he continues to see clearly. He knows who Riley is. He figures out who Jesse is and that lovely double entendre at the beginning of “Today is the Day, Pt2” when he tells Derek he wants to talk about Derek’s future; oh so subtle. I don’t see him crying over Derek’s death because future John would “beat his a**” for that. I think he realizes more than the others that J-Day is inevitable. I also think that had there been a Season 3 we might have seen just why it is he who is the leader of the resistance. I think his ability with computers is an unknown quantity. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

the "Run" statement is sentimental to Sarah. Remember the first movie when Sarah and John's father first met. I don't have the script in front of me but The conversation when somewhere along the lines,Sarah: How do you survive? Reese: We run going from waitressing to mothering the leader of the resistance in only two days has got to take some toll. Let Sarah live on the few words she spoke with Reese-hope! john connor has to learn not run from his destiny and to fight it face on runing is the cowards way out he was tought buy his mother to stand and fight like a soilder what was that saying "get on your feet soilder on your feet" is to get courage withing you to stand up and fight in what you belive in like john had to belive in fighting the war against the machines and the hope for survial what is survial without the casue and the goal that you are surviing for. the reason for him crying when derek died he was a link to the knowlege of his father casue derek had his father blood and courage running throught out his veains so when he looked into his eyes he seen kyles soul looking back at him and kyle was in derek all the time that how he knew how to control john and show him the wrights from the his wrongs.
