New IGN interview McG talks T5 and mentions TSCC impact

Here is the link to the article:http://movies.ign.com/articles/101/1011868p1.html This article was posted yesterday August 7, 2009 Here is the Q&A with McG regarding the TV Show: Q: Do you think the TV show perhaps lessened the impact of having a new Terminator movie? McG: That's one of those things that we realized looking over our shoulder. I believe that we can put enough separation into our film construct where the television show would be the television show and the film will be the film. But one could also argue that cannibalized Superman to some degree – with Smallville doing its thing. It's always witchcraft. It's guess work. It's dangerous. It was very difficult to follow in the footsteps of my hero, Jim Cameron. I did the best I could and I learned a great deal, and I'm certain that I'm a better storyteller now, having had that experience. And I think the next film is going to be very pleasing and very surprising to the fans. That's the goal. McG's response is cryptic to me. He seems to be saying that they didn't fully consider the impact of the T.V. show in advance. It also seems like he is inferring that the movie and TV show should be separate but not too separate. Is this revealing something about the future of TSCC? Is he merely trying to blame the lackluster performance of the film on the existence of TSCC? Topic: Is McG hinting at anything about the future of TSCC in his statement, or what is your opinion of the overall planned direction of T5 based on the information thus far, or what direction would you like to see T5 go? I think it might be wishful thinking, i think he was trying to say is one of the things they had to watch out for was the show. I also think he is saying because how the show was written and done it might of changed the opinions about the movie. People see one style of writing then another style and go "What the hell?!!"I don't know, it is all speculation right now. Do you find this valuable? |

I'd like to see T5 go in the direction of not being filmed at all. Until WB hires someone who can actually write coherently and has actually seen the first two movies; and a competent director, we're not going to see anything worth watching in T5. Also, McG may have been trying to say the show affected the movie's success in some way, which isn't really the case. T4 just plain sucked, it was horribly written, and badly directed.

But one thing strange to me is why does he need to watch out for the show when it's gone. There should be no need to worry about that story line anymore because it should be a dead end. Something to think about. Do you find this valuable? |

I haven't seen salvation yet, i plan on seeing it, but from what i was told it was more of a "lol lets use lots of special effects and stupidly huge budgets rather then make a decent story." type of movie. Movies need to go back to the basics, good characters, good story, good writing, then work on the effects. Look at T1 and T2 for example look what they had to work with and they turned out to be works of art. I think T4 could even hurt TSCC, people see that and go "Gah, terminator has gone down the toilet." Then when people see TSCC they're pretty sketchy about it thinking it is like the movie. Yeah they need to be careful about T5, hell they should of been careful with T3, and T4. As they keep getting more further away from what makes terminator..terminator. At least with TSCC they kept true to the series with a timeline and story that complement T2. With the tv show they could make it last as long as they want, or in till J-DAY and moved to a new story with the same characters. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"And I think the next film is going to be very pleasing and very surprising to the fans. That's the goal."Wow. Do they mean it's going to suck twice as much? Tough goal, but I bet they can nail it. Edit: Yeah Salvation was a pretty and cool movie alone, but it does not belong in the Terminator franchise. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I think he's mad b/c TSCC had a better storyline than T4 and a lot of people picked up on that. "Yeah, i got that feeling too from reading it. Someone is a little butthurt because TSCC has a good story. Despite that i hope T4 does sell well, i just hope these guys learn and make a better movie this time. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. TSCC isn't to blame for T4's failure. McG is. And he dares to call himself a disciple of James Cameron. LOL.

I hope TSCC outsells T4. That would send a real statement to WB.

Very interesting. We should keep an eye on this, and our ear to the ground...I've heard some stuff that may collaborate anyone's speculation here, but I'm not at liberty to say. I don't have a confirmed valid source, and wouldn't want to go out on a limb. Also, I don't think my source is gonna let me give anything away, if I get told anything more at all. BTW, I really got pissed about the T4 leak of the original script - no matter what it was. You mean to tell me that people working on a $200 mil project - obviously very well paid - the money they make isn't good enough? If it were my $200 mil on the table I'd gather everyone around and at the meeting I'd come in with $25 grand in cash, and literally show them that I was handing it to a wiseguy hitman, who is given instructions to seek and "handle" anyone that leaks information that would subvert the project - and the people they gave the information to! Bet that would change people's minds about being spies... That whole scenario served to set off a chain of events that made T4 less than it should have been. I don't think that is right. Let's just hope this "surprising" and "pleasing" service to the fans isn't what I think it might be...DO NOT WANT them to adapt elements or characters from TSCC into the T3/T4/T5/T6 films. DO NOT WANT such a poor man's substitute and consolation prize in the face of the lost show. McG: "Let's please the TSCC fans by putting Cameron and Derek into our timeline!" Me: "If you inject something amazing, let's say chocolate, into something terribad, like a dead horse, guess what improves... Nothing! You've still got a rotting horse, and that chocolate's never going to be as great as it once was. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

McG should be fired from any future Terminator films. The man cannot direct for sh-t. Halcyon should be disbanded and its investors forever scattered to the four winds. James Cameron should use his considerable wealth (along with another good-movie-friendly investor like Tom Hanks' "Playtone") to fold the Terminator franchise back under Lightstorm Entertainment's umbrella. That way Halcyon, Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna cannot continue to shred apart and weaken Cameron's baby until no one will touch the Terminator franchise with a ten foot cattle prod and the name is forever tainted. Cameron would then have the power to either write and/or direct any other stories himself or hand pick writers and directors he feels would do his story justice. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Thanks for the link.Well, the way I see it, McG isn't necessarily refering to TSCC as if it were still running right now, because this question was mostly about Salvation and how the tv show impacted it or not. TSCC was only cancelled a few days before the opening of T4, so... I don't see an opinion about the impact on T5 in his answer. I also don't read a "separate, but not too separate" intention between the movies and the tv show in his answer. Maybe this is just my bad. About the future of TSCC (if there is any), I also don't see any kind of hint or indication in his answer whatsoever. It's not exactly his department anyway. You're doing wishful thinking, imho. About the overall direction of T5 (and since McG is all we have) I'm curious to see what he will do with time travel this time (could be a mess, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed), and I'm pleased to read he will re-introduce a much more clearly defined antagonist, turning the whole thing into more of a chase movie with a new Terminator that is on your ass. This format (though maybe a little overdone by now) did a lot for the previous movies of the franchise and I hope it will do well for T5 too. Just my two cents anyway. Do you find this valuable? |

He was speaking about T4, TSCC was running when T4 go to world market.some conclusion about McG words -believe that we can put enough separation into our film construct where the television show would be the television show and the film will be the film- No team work like Star Trek, 0 team work, some team work of TSCC and Terminator movies could be good (my opinion) - It's guess work. It's dangerous- McG say it clear TSCC is dangerous for Terminator movies (McG opinion). In my opinion TSCC helps terminator movies, TSCC has millions of fans in the world, my current forescast 15 millions, if you enjoy Star Trek Tv Show, you go to Star Trek movies, I am sure many people(millions) go to T4 only for TSCC (I am one). TSCC was a great advertisement for T4. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"McG should be fired from any future Terminator films. Halcyon should be disbanded.I could be completely wrong on this but I heard that James Cameron lost the rights to Terminator. This was both good and bad in that it gave us TSCC (but also aloowed the story to be butchered in other ways). I believe I heard James Cameorn came out in an interview and said if he had his way he would have stopped EVERYTHING after T2 and not gone any further. Mean's no T3 or T4 but would also mean no TSCC. I'm thinking that if James were to get the rights back to Terminator I'm not sure he would let TSCC live on... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Let's just hope this "surprising" and "pleasing" service to the fans isn't what I think it might be...Witty and humurous as always, Deadpool. Still, you really, really read this much into McG's words? Do you really believe he will introduce TSCC's elements in T5 or T6? Do you really think he could mean this by his "surprising" and "pleasing" words? I didn't read that at all. The tv show is small time to them. I never saw any intention of integrating it into the movies and they said they wouldn't do it from the start about Salvation. Still, if this somehow happens, I think like you: DO NOT WANT to see TSCC elements in a crappy T5 movie. (not that Salvation was necessarily crappy in my book, though). I wouldn't mind a somehow crappy TSCC movie, thought. Better than nothing, and we all would still get our fix... lol Do you find this valuable? |
