Terminator 4: What do you think of Danny Elfman's Music to the Movie?
May 25 2009, 11:56 PM EDT | Post edited: May 26 2009, 12:59 AM EDT
Danny Elfman composed the music to Terminator Salvation. What do you think of the music he created for the movie, such as the new theme and the use of Brad Fiedel's Terminator Theme? (Thoughts opinions)

Anybody?

Good or Bads?

Appropriately subdued except for the major action points. Mostly unmemorable, but wise in not jarringly veering away from Fiedel's music like they did in T3. I thought the opening credits variation was a respectful homage. Liked the music where Marcus is walking through the desert finding road tracks in the beginning.
Mostly subdued and and unnoticeable for the most part but that was ok. I wouldn't mind getting the soundtrack.

Would be nice if Bear McCreary also had a shot at doing these movies. His scoring for TSSC is wonderful.

Very thankful NO circus and fluff music like Simpsons or Burton's Batman. No stupid waltzes. Besides that, Elfman does great "dark" tones and sudden dramatic flashy motifs. Liked his work on "Planet of the Apes" remake. Liked it here too. Too bad the movie didn't work well enough for the music to really complement it.

"Anybody Else?"
Not terribly memorable. Frankly, I preferred the T3 score - it seemed to have more originality.

BTW, good to see you back on the wiki, Krazykaleb. If TSCC can be brought back, it'll take everyone's help.

As others have said, Elfman's score was unmemorable. I barely even noticed it while watching the film. Even Marco Beltrami's score for T3 had more punch.

I wish that Brad Fiedel had remained involved in all four films. I don't understand why nobody is asking him to do Terminator scores any more.

I've always loved the Terminator theme....so when it started up I got appropriately excited, but other than that to be honest I didn't take note of the music very much. I alllways note the music, so I find that weird, now that you bring up this topic... and Danny Elfman I usually like too... Do you find this valuable?

Not very notable... I prefer the music and sound from T1-T3 more. Do you find this valuable?

I'm glad someone started a thread about this...I think the music is a big part of any movie.
I picked up the soundtrack and was sorely disappointed. I agree with others that think Bear McCreary's music on TSCC was WAY better.
Most of my favorite SciFi movies have great soundtracks: Jurassic Park, T2, The Matrix, Spider-Man...

I didnt care for his music to be honest, not desperate enough, I miss Brad Fiedel, to me no one can make a Terminator score, he made the first score and the score for T2. I think choosing Danny Elfman was a decent choice but his music is way too Tim Burton and not enough Terminator. Do you find this valuable?

I liked it, already bought the soundtrack. Some very cool new synthesizer riffs on the Terminator Theme amidst the symphonics...

anybody recognize the damn 'Dark Knight/Batman Begins' theme playing during the film? I have the soundtrack to both these films and it is very similar...

I think it's because he doesn't want to do any more movies.

Also, I thought Elfman did a pretty good Job. But that's just me. McG wanted to have Hans Zimmer do it originally but Zimmer was doing other projects at the time and he couldn't. I think Elfman did a good job at trying to reinvent the music but I do think he need to make more themes than he did and plus he needed to redo or reuse some of Brad Fiedels music.

Elfman and Fiedel did talk to each other about what should be done for the new films direction. I thought the music sounded more epic than techno which is why a lot of people didn't like it. I bought the soundtrack and I think it's good. I give it an:

8 out of 10.

Yeah I did. That's why I said they originally wanted Hans Zimmer who did The Dark Knight and Batman Begins with James Newton Howard. But in my previous post he couldn't do it because he was working on another project (ie. most likely helping Steve Jablonsky on the Transformers Score.)

But I still liked the new soundtrack. Us fans mostly resent it because it's obviously somthing different about it. This is what McG wanted, he wanted to simbolize that this new movie in the first line of his new trilogy is somthing different or reinvented about the new films, Don't be surprised that John Connor Actually goes through time in the next movie because the use the television show of TSCC time travel string theory in the new movies.

Elfman's opening score for Salvation is very good and certainly sounds like an orchestrated homage to Fiedel's work . His ambient and acoustic pieces also fit the film quite well, while never feeling out of place for a Terminator movie. It's also nice that he used some of Fiedel's chord progressions with only minor alterations to their respective structures. That being said, I think Bear McCreary's compositions are far better than both Elfman's and Fiedel's. The end theme for TSCC is nothing short of an epic masterpiece.

Edit: I'm listening to the TSCC OST at the moment and it's a damn shame McCreary's score won't be used in subsequent episodes of this show. It's a waste.
