Derek asks Kyle ''where your going bro? Connor wants to have a series debriefing right now with you and Kilee A.S.A.P'' Derek says in a series tune to Kyle. He replies ''why what happen? Don't Connor know that she can't be removed from the infirmary?'' asks Kyle. As he stated this they where in front of the infirmary. The door where Kilee was staying unlocked itself from her side they didn't know that she overheard them talking from the other side. The door opens, they both turn around and see with there faces in shock Kilee walking two crutches and she says to Kyle ''its ok I’m fine lets go see what he wants to know?'' So then Derek takes them to the meeting room Kyle asks ''hey where is everybody and especially Connor?'' Derek replies very loud as a signal when he turns on the lights ''you know bro sometimes its better if you shut up and stop questioning your commending officer'' then as the lights go on everyone yells ''SURPRIZE!!'' They all come out with a cake that says happy birthday ''Double K'S'' the look on Kyle’s face was priceless as his face turned red with joy as well as Kilee’s face with tears of joy then along with Derek everyone started singing Happy Birthday to them while little did they know John was standing in the back of the group singing with a pointing party hat on and a beer in his hand with a slight smile on his face knowing who Kyle really is to him but can't tell him but he enjoyed the moment as he seen joy on his and Kilee faces. They partied, the cook made a special meal for them all the troops found some hot dogs and some buns in one of the buildings that Connor sent them too along with a supplies of beer and Arizona ice tea cans still well refrigerated for Kyle and Kilee since they are to young to drink they had a good time. Derek joked along with others then with Kyle and Kilee they laughed so hard that Kilee almost spilled her ice tea. But it was all fun then as the party ended John pulls Kyle to the side and says ''hey birthday boy can I have a word with you a minute?''

The Picture

Kyle followed John out into the corridor. The older man walked across the hall pushing his hand through his hair. Then turned and looked at the boy. "When I was your age my mother gave me a flack jacket for my birthday. See someone told her about me and all this." He waved his hand around to indicate the hall they where in. Kyle looked at him not knowing what to say. "My father died before the war. Mom told me that he was a good man. The love of her life. She always talked about him as if he were this great hero. But no one knew him, not really. You won't find even a mention of him in any of the history books, but he was her hero and he was what kept her going. Through all those years alone." John turned back to Kyle. "I never got the chance to tell her that she was all that and more for me. If it wasn't for her the human race would have ended with those bombs. If it wasn't for Sarah Connor we would all be dead. But no one remembers her, except me." He stares into nothing for a minute. Finally Kyle has something to say "and Kilee" John looks at him again his eyes are slightly glazed his face holds the most surprised expression and he laughs "I have always forgotten that she knew her." He smiles and walks away from Kyle a few feet. Then turns and comes back to him. John reaches into his pocket and pulls out a piece of paper he hands it to Kyle. The boy looks at a faded photograph of a beautiful woman not much older than he is. She looks sad and he wonders what she is thinking. "Who is this?" he asks. "That" John says pointing to the picture "Is THE Legend. My mother Sara Connor." Kyle looks back at her and tries to memorize the photo before handing it back to John. But the older man just shakes his head. "Keep it I have her with me here" he touches his heart and then his head. "She has brought me luck, let her bring you yours." Kyle looks at the photograph again. He would love to keep it the woman is very beautiful, but it is not his it means more to John and he goes to hand it back once again "I don't need luck, I have Kilee back. She is all I need." John smiles "IS she. Will she be out there with you. Will you ask your best friend to fight in the trenches with you so that she can bring you luck. Will you put her in the line of fire just because she will go when you ask?" Kyle looked confused but before he could answer a cool female voice said behind him "He would never have to ask. I would always be there first waiting for him. I would give up everything for him." Kyle turned and looked into the fierce face of Kilee. She was glaring right into the great John Connor's eyes without blinking. Behind her stood Derek he looked just as surprised by what Kilee said as Kyle did. The only ones that didn't seem surprised continued to stare at each other until John said "Always Kilee. Can you guarantee that?" Kilee smiled it was without emotion and looked eerie and out of place on such a young face. "With my life. Where Kyle Reese goes I will always follow." John laughed "And so you shall my young friend. You will live your life always looking out for him." With that John started walking away. Kyle yelled out "wait you forgot this" He was holding out the picture. John didn't turn or say anything just walked on down and around the corner. Kyle looked at the picture again and mumbled only loud enough for Kilee to hear "Okay I will keep it safe for you." He then tucked it into his jacket pocket and turned to face Kilee and Derek. Kyle was shocked at what he saw. Kilee stood facing him with her sweet little girl smile, but Derek was the surprise. He was looking at Kilee not the way an older brother should look at a sister. That is how Kyle always thought of the two of them.
Derek was looking at Kilee they way you stare at that secret crush in school. It only lasted a second and then Derek looked up at his younger brother and laughed. It was a slightly nervous sound "What's the matter bro? You look like you've seen a ghost." Kyle forced a smile and said "No just something I never thought I would see." "Well if we are done jabbering here could you guys walk me back to my room. I am exhausted." Kilee said. Before Kyle could say any thing Derek stepped to Kilee's side and took the crutches from her holding her up as he handed them to Kyle. Then he gently lifted her into his arms and smiled at her. "Let me give you a lift little lady." Kilee laughed Derek often had them watch those old western shows. The three walked in silence Kyle a little behind the other two. He pulled the picture out again to look at the lovely face. He noticed that John had his mothers eyes, but they looked softer and warmer in the woman’s face. He smiled and tucked the picture safely away before the others saw him starring at it. How odd, he thought, his first crush and it just had to be on John Connor's mother. His father must've been the luckiest guy in the world! He smiled and began to sing a favorite song of Kilee's. Soon the other two joined in and they sang all the way back to the infirmary. None of them noticed the silent figure in the shadows watching them. He was the only one that saw Kyle looking at the picture. He saw the gentle way his face changed as he looked at it. John Connor smiled and whispered to himself before turning and walking back to his own room. "Good night dad and happy birthday!"
The next day Kilee was released from the infirmary, but this posed a problem. All the beds in the orphanage where full and Derek and Kyle no longer had their own apartment. Since they moved into the barracks another family took their place. Kilee had no where to go. When it came time for her to leave John Connor walked in. "Well it looks like you need a place to live" Kilee looked at him. She was beginning to think that John Connor was a jerk! She was still mad over the conversation the night before "Don't worry" she said angrily "I will find some where to go I always do." John nodded "Oh I will never worry over you. You are a survivor my dear." He said and then walked over to the wheel chair that she was in. Derek was standing behind her "Can she come stay with us at the barracks? I will move out of the office she could stay there." “Afraid not, too much distraction to such young male minds." John smiled "nope I have a better place for her" Kyle said "But when she heals she can join up with the training with me right?" John looked at Kyle "I told you boy that was a special case you have to be 16 to be in the regular fighting force." “Then where is Kilee to go now" Kyle was almost whining in his worry over his friend. John smiled "She is coming with me." "Yes but where?" Derek asked. John looked at him "With me to live at my place." The three of them where shocked and looked at each other. They had no idea what to say. "speechless you three. Will wonders never cease." John joked. "I have plenty of room. I live alone in a four room apartment. You can come and go as you like. Besides I'm hardly there. I will expect Derek to keep looking after you when I can't" Derek nodded his agreement to this. So did Kyle. "Then it is settled lets go" He turned to walk out Kilee said "but what about Katie?"
John stopped in the hallway and turned to look at her "It's not like we're married." Seeing the angry face of Kilee he realized this was the wrong thing to say. So he knelt down in front of her and looked at the ground a moment before he raised his head to look into Kilee's face. His own held all the sorrow he had been forced to see in his life, all the loneliness and pain when he said "you are the only person left alive with real memories of my mother. She saved you once because that is the person she is. She never killed anyone, but she was the best fighter I knew. You are the closest thing I have to her know and at times it helps to be reminded of things that can keep you strong and keep life in perspective." Kilee reached out her hand and wiped the single tear that was rolling down John's face then she kissed him on the check and said "okay lead the way" It was the closest they ever got to talking about Sarah Connor while Kyle Reese was still in their future. Years later John would tell Kilee who Kyle really was and he would then talk again about his mother. But for now he was glad that the young girl had so much grace about her that she let it go. Neither Derek nor Kyle ever brought that moment up again either. The four of them walked to John's place. They got Kilee set up in her own room that shockingly had 2 beds. When asked about this John said in case she wanted sleep over’s, and winked at Kyle. He had heard about the incident in the infirmary and knew that nothing but time would ever come between the double K's. That night Derek and Kyle joined them for dinner when another soldier came in. He saluted Connor and when John gave him permission to speck he said "Sir the two teenage girl machines have taken out Carter's platoon. Only ten men have returned and they are in the infirmary now getting fixed up. It is unclear if any will survive their wounds." "Oh Shit!" John swore.
John gets up from his table and runs Derek, Kyle and Kilee follow him past the corridor doors in to the infirmary and sees about 9 men crying in pain from missing arms and legs the mini gun blast that those 2 teenage girl machines where armed with but one of them was Samantha but she was loosing a lot of blood Derek look and yelled ''SAM!!!!!
what’s wrong what happened?''' Derek said in a panic voice to LT. Carter. He replied back to Derek but as soon as he could replied to him the doctors lost Sam they couldn't stop the bleeding in time a line of tears fell down his face as Kyle put his hands on his shoulders as John and Kilee ask Carter what happen out there? Carter steps out with them out of the infirmary with them he lights a Marlboro with his hands shacking a bit as he explains to John, Kyle, Derek and Kilee what happened. ''Look we where doing a recon
in this empty school we herd that there was some food supplies there so me and my platoon went in we open the front doors enter with caution we got in half way to the hallway only to be fired on by them these machines that had rubber skin hanging over there face with a big M-60.''Carter kept on as he couldn't finish his Marlboro and flicks at away he continued the story'' we took them on and held up with those metal fucking monsters sir''. Carter counties ''we from a solid fight against them I believe there was 3 of the ones with the rubber skin they went down pretty easy we took out 2 of them we were about to close in on the third one until these 2 teenage girls crash through the wall both of them was armed with a mini guns and fired on us I yelled for them to fall back but it was too late Sam tried to get in close to drop an emp grenade but one of them saw what she was trying to do stopped firing her mini gun and pulled out a large bowing knife and stab her in her stomach deep enough to open it up and her guts fell on the floor in front her eyes it just stayed there watching her die.'' ''Then they just walked away I emptied my whole 9mm clip in there faces they did nothing after it was empty its like I wasn't a danger to them or something?'' he now stops talking to break down in tears and starts crying as he falls to the floor. John tells him ''look young man you've been throw a lot why don't you go to the doctor and ask them to give you something to try to sleep? until I can figure out what we are going up against now from skynet ok soldier'' John said in a firm caring voice to Carter he says ''Yes sir''.
As Carter walks away from them down the corridor door John turns his back to him to talk to Derek he tells Kyle to take Kilee back to but all of sudden they all hear a gunshot.
All the men along with John, Kyle and Derek pull out there 9mm's run to the corridor door to see that the gunshot was from LT. Carter he had shot himself in the side of the head because of the fear he felt about going back out there again with those machines and feeling responsible for their lives of his next platoon. Now we go forward 5 yrs later
to see the Reese bros out in the trenches on patrol now Derek is 30 Kyle is 20.
