One night John sent for the double K's as they entered the command center it was to discover about a dozen men and women waiting for them. "Have a seat." a solemn John said indicating two chairs beside Derek. They walked over and sat down. "Okay now that we are all here this is what is going to happen. There is a building we have been watching and I believe that it is time for us to strike at it." He looked around the room "This is a strictly voluntary mission, we may not all come back." he sighed "Actually I will doubt that many of us will make it back." He looked at them all again and then leaned onto the table "You are my best, my most trusted, any one of you have saved my neck countless of times. I will be there beside you, but I need you all." "Well we are in" Kyle said indicating himself, Kilee and Derek. John held up his hand "Let the others speak for themselves Kyle." "If Kyle goes I go" Kilee said. Derek looked at the two of them then turned to John "someone has to watch their backs! I'm in." The others around the table all stated that they would follow no matter the outcome. John nodded "okay here is the plan. We are going in in groups of two or four men. The smaller the group the better chance of getting through their defenses I think. What we find inside will need to be destroyed. Kilee you and Kyle will go together, Kyle I need you to lay the explosives. Derek you and three others will cover their backs." He continued around the table handing out the assignments. When finished he said "You are to tell no one about this. We will move out at midnight. Try to get some rest. You all have the rest of the day off from any other duties. We will meet at the west exit. You may go." As they were getting up John added "Kilee stay a moment please." He wanted to brace her for what was to come, but how could he.
Kilee waited until everyone was out the door then she walked over to John "I know what you are going to say. I may be young but this is my life and I will go! It may be that I have to watch them die, or that I will die to protect them but I told you before, I am not the type to stay home and wonder I am the best." John watched her as she said this and he realized that she wasn't even 21 yet. In the old days that would mean that she couldn't even drink. Yet she had seen so much pain and suffering and he knew more was to come for her. He stood up and pulled her into his arms. Crushing her to him, he buried his face into her long red hair. She had held him, before when she lived with him during the night, when he had his night mares. He had been there for her as well, even though it was Kyle who was best at settling her down. John had done alright when needed. As he pulled away he looked into her face. She was a little surprised at the tears flowing down his. "You are so much like my mother, strong and loyal to the end. but tonight may be the end for many of us. I need you to promise me something." "What" she said curiously. "If anything happens to me you do everything you can to get back here alive." she interrupted "I will rather stay and fight with you. " John smiled a sad small smile that never reached his eyes. "I need you here Kilee. I need you to lead them after I am gone." She was shocked never had she even considered that John would want her in charge. He always said she was to quick to jump into a fight, that she didn't think it all through, that she was to young. "I trust you more than anyone I have ever met. You know I was wrong, you are not like my mother." She frowned she had liked the comparison. He grinned "You are like me!" With that they hugged again "Promise me!" John whispered. "I promise I will come back alive." she answered.
John let her go and she walked out to meet Kyle who had been waiting for her. "What did the old man want?" he asked. Kilee looked at him "me to lead if he doesn't return." "Wow" Kyle said. The two wondered together to their favorite spot over the battlements. They had stopped by the kitchens and picked up some sandwiches and drinks before heading up there.
Derek, meanwhile, went to look for Cameron. He found her alone in the laundry room. He wasted no time telling her about the new mission he was to go on that night. She played the part well. Acting concerned in all the right places and flinching when he talked about John saying they may not come back. The pair spent a few hours together before Cameron said she had to go help in the kitchens to get supper ready. Derek went in search of the double K's and Cameron went to report to sky net!
After supper Derek, Kyle, and Kilee went to get some sleep. They had been on night missions before and knew how important a few hours sleep could be. Kilee remembering the way John had acted asked if she could sleep with them. Kyle wrapped his arm around her shoulder sensing the tension in her that had been building ever since she left the command center, he said "Of course Ki." They all headed to the barracks. As Kilee wrapped herself into the blanket Kyle slipped his arm around her again "Relax we will all come back we always do. Besides I am only laying the explosives and you and Derek are only watching over me. It is not like we will see any real action. We slip in we slip out like ghosts in the dark." Though he meant to reassure her Kilee had the feeling that it wasn't going to be that easy. If it was John would not had reacted like he did. It wasn't what he said, but what he had done. Hugging her like that. He hadn't done that in years, and the tears it had been awhile for them as well. It took her awhile to drift off to sleep.
The alarm woke them at 11:30 that night and they dressed in their combat gear in silence then headed down to the west exit. Only Connor was there waiting. He looked up at them as they walked down the hall. He saw how young and determined they were, he only then realized how his mother must have felt all those years working to protect him. He wanted more then anything to send the three of them back to bed, but knew that it couldn't happen. He tossed the drink can he had into the garbage and stood up. "Welcome to the first night of the rest of your life." He tried to smile, tried to joke, anything to lighten the mood. He nearly lost it when Kilee walked up to him and hugged him. She said nothing but her body was so tight that he knew he had not been able to hide his fears from her. How he wished he could tell someone everything he knew that was yet to come. He held onto her a little to long not wanting to let her go and let this mission start. "Okay looks like we are all here." The voice of Lt. Cobbs said. John sighed and let her go. "Lets move out, you all know what to do." when they nodded he turned away not looking at Kilee again and headed out the exit. They all split off as they reached the cool night air. Kyle pulled the pack of explosives tighter around him, and stepped between Derek and Kilee. They walked in silence until the building was in sight. They saw Connor's team briefly as the group of four rounded a pile of junk metal. Then Derek held his team back and made a parameter as Kilee and Kyle moved closer. Kyle laid the bombs and Kilee followed him step for step watching the area around them. They had not seen any machines yet. After the third bomb was in place they heard shots being fired from their left. Kilee kept a closer watch on that side as Kyle quickened his pace. Once they were done they made their way back to Derek. Kilee however saw something that made her stop. Connor had entered the building alone. This was not part of the plan and she turned to follow him. Kyle had just reached Derek's group when he realized Kilee wasn't with him. As Derek and his team joked a little Kyle looked around. He saw Kilee walking towards the building. He stood up and walked that way. A bright light illuminated the area from over head and Kyle ran into the building. Meanwhile Kilee had come up behind Connor. He turned and saw her "So much for that promise." he said "Sorry" was her only reply. Just then a few machines came around a corner. John used hand motions to send Kilee after them. As she rounded the corner out of sight Kyle walked in. John pulled him into the hiding spot and the two moved together into the main room. What they saw amazed them. It was a huge circular device sat in the middle of the room. Lighting seemed to be shooting out of it into giant towers on either side. Just then a machine that looked human moved up to the center of the circle. Another came over to it "Report your mission" "To find Sarah Connor, mother of John Connor and terminate her before she gives birth." The other machine nodded as Kyle said "He is going back in time!" "Yes" John replied "Then we need to stop him." just then a flash of light surrounded the humanoid machine and it disappeared. "Confirm" said the other machine to one setting beside one of the huge towers "Mission successful." it said. The machines then walked away. Kyle said "we need to go back and stop him. He will kill your mother!" "I cannot go I'm needed here." Kyle looked into John's face. His hand went to the pocket that still held the picture of Sarah Connor. Kyle made up his mind "Then I will go." He laid down the weapons he had and walked to the machine. John made sure the time was still set then pressed the firing button. In a burst of light Kyle was gone, and John heard the scream. "NO!!!!" Kilee yelled as she saw the light surround Kyle. She started to run towards him as he disappeared. Arms grabbed her Kilee fought throwing a few punches over her shoulder, head butting whatever held her. She was reaching for the knife at her side when John Connor screamed into her ear "He's my father he has to go back so I can be!" Kilee felt the air rush out of her. Her body went limp Kyle was gone. She had no other reason to live. John held onto her as they fell slowly to the floor. "He had to go back I am so sorry." He said crying now at the empty emotionless face of the girl. "How long" she said in a hoarse choked voice. "All my life!" he knew what she had meant, how long had he known that Kyle was his father and had to go back to create him. The slap that rocked his head backward was unexpected but he still did not loosen his arms from around her. She hit at every part of him yelling things he didn't always make out. When she was done she laid limp and crying in his arms. Then he made the most difficult decision of his life. He told Kilee Dixon everything. From the moment Kyle went back, how he fell in love with Sarah and Sarah with him. How in a cheap motel they had one night together and he was created. How Kyle died. This rendered another thrashing from Kilee and he endured then continued on how the other Terminators came back, how he the now 'future John" sent back help for him and his mother. How he knew Kilee herself would go back. He also told her about Derek and Cameron. The only thing he left out was how Derek fell in love with her back in 2007. He wanted her to discover that on her own. They had been in the building for hours, Derek and the others had not come in. Kilee asked about this. "Cameron has them, she has already betrayed them." "You kept me here telling me all of this when we could have helped them." "No we would have been caught to."
