I am fine with Derek going out...but going out by some Termiantor walking around a corner was a joke.
Sorry. I personally would have prefered him taking a bullet for John or Sarah, thus furthering his "we all die for you"
but really he just died for nothing here. No fight, not even getting a shot off.
I mean seriously. You want to kill him--fine go ahead but make it go for something worth while. That was just too...well..boring.
It was a boring way for him to die.

I for one really love TSCC and dug this episodes. But I must disagree with the surprising and shocking death.
I didn't have any emotional response what so ever, other then saying "What the hell was that?" out loud.
You bring up Kyle in T1, but look at how Kyle died! Saving Sarah, essentially killing himself to protect her.

Shouldn't blame the writers so much as it's beem known for sometime that BAG has been looking for work elsewhere. If there is to be a 3rd season (writers generally write under the assumption there will be) he may not be avalible. The only solution is to "write him out" before the end of the currant season. The same would hold true if Summer Glau were to find "greener pastures"....our beloved little "sheborg" would have to meet an untimely end as well.

1, yes I can be that pissed and I am. It was boring and unnecessary. There is plenty of death in the show and Charlie died last week so I don't think John can stop the war by himself. It reminded me of the Departed, where everyone basically got killed just like that. No ceremony, no agonizing and coughing blood. Just blam - ragdoll. In the Departed it actually got old, but here I thought it was great. And yeah, him taking a bullet for John or Sarah would have been cheesy.
I'm sad about it, but great shows do this kind of stuff. There are consequences.

I'll maintain some professionalism here.
I didn't attack your opinion nor try and say that your entertainment value that you gained from the show was any less or more then anyone else.
But I simply must say that yes people do in the line fire. People also in fact die taking bullets for people. Soldiers have jumped on grenades saving their comrades.
Pilots have flown their planes out of harms way only to crash and die themselves or fly their plane into a Kamikaze plane trying to take out a battleship in WW2
you can say those things don't happen. but you would be unfortunately mistaken.
Plus real life is boring that is why we watch a Sci fi TV show of machines killing humans and the unrealistic messiah John Connor rising up and saving all of humanity.
may peace or the force be with and continue to enjoy the show just as I will.

The Departed was an all-time classic movie... Everyone died, and they died amazingly, and after the movie you went "that was awesome."
THE SAME goes for Derek's death... Charley died protecting John... Derek died fighting as a soldier against Skynet and trying to save Savannah... It was a realistic death, this is how soldiers die, not some cliche explosion or bullet-save..
You may pissed right now, that Derek died... but just imagine how pissed you would be if he predictably dies in front of John, and takes a bullet for him... I dare you to say you would be happy he died in that way... Like as if a terminator stops shooting after someone stops one bullet... It would be childish and silly... The writers know that, and that's why they killed him as a REAL HERO..

OK, to elaborate on my original post on why I'm out, I'll get to those reasons in a minute.
First of all, I didn't start watching the show for one character, I've been there since episode one. I'm just mad because I feel like JF, the writers and FOX were killing Derek off slowly this season via character assasination. If you read the other thread about this subject, you'll see the points I made there about it.
There was so much potential for Derek and it was just wasted over the course of this season. He should have been more active in missions, hell, the whole cast should have been more active in missions! More to the point, though, after he and John had established the Uncle/Father Figure connection they should have just ran with it and came up with better things for him to do besides sleeping with future g/f, delivering babies and whatever else he was doing. For all we know he was calling numbers at Bingo games at the local senior center all of this time. He just wasn't given enough to do, and that's why the ratings tanked, because NOBODY was given enough to do this season.
The only thing interesting that's been going on this season is the CW/Ellison/John Henry storyline, and that's what kept me tuning in for the most part. But after tonight, I'm just fed up. WTF is wrong with Ellison? How the hell CW doesn't creep him out defies logic at this point. His boss is more concerned about a cyborg plugged into an AI than her daughter and he STILL hasn't caught on that she might be one of them? Bullocks!!
Derek getting offed was just the icing on the rancid cake for me. Sorry if most don't agree with me, but I'm just telling it to you straight, people.

There was a comedian, his name is Elliot Chang, you can find him on youtube, he makes a joke where he talks about a story, and then he says F*** dat, kicks the air and says "there I just kicked that baby". Everyone shocked by the joke goes "Awww" or "*Gasp**" or start whispering to each other etc and not laughing...
Then he will say "Yeah, you're upset I kicked a fictional baby, great!"
Well I don't know the exact words, but after that everyone burst into laughter. It was indeed hilarious I assure you.
Derek's death was realistic, and it shouldn't piss you off, it's a TV show, and it represents reality against fighting machines, and when you fight machines, people die...

You're simplifying everything...
How can Ellison suspect CW? No one in the world would suspect CW, because no one believes in machine terminators. Ellison, while he knows about the terminators, he has to pretend to not know about them. Being suspicious of CW, yeah he probably was suspicious, but if he showed it, or even if he thought of it, he would say to himself "you're being paranoid"... It would be unrealistic to think ANYONE can suspect CW of ANYTHING... CW is always innocent and seems perfectly normal.
Even Cameron looks more out of place than CW.
You're right, Derek and the whole family needed to have been more active in missions, but maybe the writer's learned their lesson and will do so, if we get a season 3. But it's difficult to have so many missions, they don't have movie budgets, and they don't wanna make the movie a termiantor-of-the-week because people whine, so they focused more on character development. Well now people complain about character-development, so they been trying to be original...
It's very difficult to satisfy everyone in a serialized show... enjoy the parts you enjoy, and PLEASE, give the show a chance, you might enjoy it, even if it doesn't go the way you want it. I never wanted Derek to die... and I as a perfectionist, criticized the show for this or that, but I been enjoying this show, and I understood I just needed to absorb the show the way it is, instead of talking about how my vision for the show is.
When you make your own show, you can have it your way.

No it won't you're exaggerating and dramatizing... Get over it... Derek died as a real hero, and although he could have been more fun and involved, he was always a supporting character not a main character. Enjoy the show for where it takes you... Life isn't what you always expect, and the same goes for a TV show... ANYTHING can happen.
People complained everyday about the X-Files not having the two main characters make-out/have-sex/marry/love-each-other... Same story for the show Bones... But it's fine... X-Files fans were pissed they never found out the whole alien conspiracy, well that's fine, we enjoyed the suspense while it lasted... You gotta learn to enjoy instead of hoping and then being angry when things don't go the way you want.

Remember when Riley was killed and John went to see her because he wanted to see if she had self defense injuries?
He had a discussion with Derek after that about whether he thought he’d have any sort of chance with Cameron if she wanted him dead. He said no. If she wanted him dead he’d be dead.
The Machine wanted him [everyone in the house] dead and that is what happened. The others were just 'lucky'.

Puns about my name, eh? Maybe this disasterpiece has an aversion to the name David ;-)
I respect your points of view, as a matter of fact, overall I tend to agree with what you bring to the table during discussions. But while I agree that yes, this started out being a very good show, I just don't think there is a true meeting of the minds in the writing room as of late.
Seriously, one of my four year old students could probably pitch some better story lines than Sarah's crazier than ever before antics for most of the season. The three dots should have been resolved in no more than two or three episodes at the most. Did we honestly really need the sleep clinic/kidnapping episode? Fine, kidnap her, but ditch the sleep clinic crap.
Bottom line? The entire Connor clan should have been doing what they were doing last season. Following leads. Getting to the bottom of them and neutralizing the threats. Then, and only then is it acceptable to kill off a main character. Yes, I do realize that Derek was killed while following an actual lead, and that's about the only thing that comforts me at this stage.
As for JF, as executive producer of the show, he's the guy who gives the green light to the writers ideas, so yeah, there's some major accountability where he's concerned.

This is really about the objective fact that it was bad writing. It would have been the same if Derek gained the ability to fly in this episode. What in the heck would that have to do with anything? The way his death was written was identical. It takes you completely out of the story.
This was a bad mistake by the producers and/or writers. It comes across like the producers and/or writers were ticked off at the actor, for whatever reason, so they gave him the shaft in writing him out of the show. That's satisfying from their perspective, but they didn't consider the audience at all.
They spent two years building his character and getting the audience involved in his life. Then, to kill him off like a red shirt on Star Trek--that's just pathetic. It's a slap in the face to the character and the audience. If the producers and/or writers are mad at the actor, fine, take it out on the actor. But don't take it out on the character, the story, and the audience.
It is a disappointment in the very core of the show. Now we know that we can spend years getting involved with a character and they can be taken out in a millisecond that has nothing to do with previous character development. It actually goes against his character.
This is the first case of bad writing I have seen on the show. I don't believe I've ever seen a case of such bad character resolution in any well-written show.
Thank you producers/writers. You didn't just slap BAG in the face, you slapped the entire audience in the face. We weren't worth it to you to come up with a satisfying resolution that was consistent with the character. Your personal feelings towards BAG overcame your professionalism and dedication to good story telling. Very bad form.
I was hoping the show would get a third season. If this is what is to be expected, I wouldn't waste my time on it.

Excellent quote...
I'm glad there are those that THOUGHT about Derek's death, like THX-1138, crusadingknight, among others...
The writers did probably agonize over weeks for this. And no this has nothing to do with Season 3 or thoughts about the future of the show, this was all written months ago, probably before the move to Friday even.
The Crazy Sarah episodes, were written when JF thought that the show was indestructible and waaay too famous anyway... He thought he had time to experiment. That was his only mistake. Derek's death is not a mistake, it's carefully planned.
Remember what derek said "if they want me dead, I'm dead". And his death shows the REALITY of the fight against machines and how vulnerable humans are. This is why James Cameron, put only Sarah, John, and Arnold into his stories, because he knew adding more human characters would be unrealistic because terminators are too powerful.
It's not like Derek was going to help Cameron bust into the police station... killing innocent civilians is not a resistance fighters job. It's not like Derek was going to complete more missions and interrogations that John who's now grown up, and Sarah, could not do.
He was useless in the show, not because of writers but because of the nature of the story.

"It was the least predictable way for Derek to die. Just... Bam...like that. He's a solider, who died in battle. The war goes on without him. But, his death will not be in vein. "
That is what I was thinking his death keeps everyone on their toes. Though he died at least he was buried near his brother and just like his brother in an unmarked grave, he died an unknown soldier. Pretty much just how he would have been buried in the future if they had the time to bury the dead.

There's no evidence either way. Anyone who claims to know is just guessing, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised to see her back in a (currently hypothetical) season 3, nor would I be surprised if she didn't.

Yes it was fairly obvious, he didn't have to get shot. Or if he did, he could have died for John back then... Why didn't he? He brought news from the future. Just like Jesse brought news from the future. When the news was delivered, they died.
Derek's death brings unpredictability to the show, and an amazing shock value... the originality of his death is great too. It was shocking and unexpected, no one expected it... (although I did predict it ONE week ago; i was surprised that he died there). However, it makes so much perfect sense, it's like the writer's thought for weeks on it, and found this to be the best way, and it was great.
You guys complaining ,thought about his death for only a fraction of a minute, think clearly and you'll realize it was a good move.

For his death was as shocking as the original Transformers the movie when I was a kid. I walked in late and the first thing I had seen was Iron Hide getting killed by Megatron. Tonight, I was about 15 minutes late to watching TSCC (ironically because I was watching T2 which I purchased today on Blu-Ray) and as soon as I turn on to FOX, Derek gets shot in the head. WTH?!
Now I didn't like BAG playing this character in season 1, but he really brought his A game in season 2. So yes, I do feel bad he won't be returning.
As for the way he died - I thought it was good. It lends to the feeling of "anything can happen." And his burial in the end was also well done in portraying the value of life in a broad perspective.

It just occurred to me what else this reminded me of.
Omar in The Wire goes out like this. For 4 seasons he's the biggest badass on the show (and most people's favorite character), and then finally he just gets popped in the head by a kid. Story over. That was awesome too.

Yeah... it was such a shock to me. There were no rumors, spoilers or even any hints of "this week, someone dies".
The way he got killed was so quick and abrupt too. Just unlucky enough to walk in front of a Terminator and catches one in the forehead. I guess it's maybe more appropriate to have him get shot like this that another drawn out, slow motion firefight, where we don't even get to see the guy get shot (like Charlie's death). Two opposite extremes of a death scene, and although I'm disappointed that there will be no more badass-Derek scenes, it was a good scene.

I guess getting killed fast was kind of foreshadowed about what he said about being in a fight with Cameron. "If she want's me dead, I'm dead." The more I think about it, the more I think that the WAY he died was great! But I'm still mad that he;s off the show.

i've noticed that the writers are probably starting to want to get back to the tight unit they had in season one and get rid of all the extra characters they created...Jesse,..Riley..Sarah's guy...the pregnant chick from the beginning with the cop.. and now Derek. Big mistake with Derek..we actually loved his character.. i am definitely pissed off that he's gone...but in some weird way..im kinda anxious to see why.. and what's gonna happen next...

As much as I miss him, I'd be kind of disappointed if they brought him back. Though I'm sure they'd try to put some interesting spin on it (and possibly do it well, too), the new Derek would still be a cheap replacement, nothing more.

OK, now THAT made me literally LOL. I'm the person who started this thread, was so pissed off about Derek getting killed and now I'm laughing because the way you described it, it actually is kind of funny!
I was expecting another Derek's bleeding out all over the kitchen table scene, but wait, Charley's dead, so he's SOL in that scenario, then they showed the bullet wound to his head and I was yelling at the TV "WTF?!? That's bull$hit!" as if I would during a football game.
One thing I'm not grasping just yet is how the hell they cremated him that fast and he's in a frigging shoebox? I know it's Potter's Field and all, but I've never heard of anyone being autopsied, cremated and buried in the span of a few hours. Hell, the sun hadn't even gone down yet!
He's running...BAM!
Oh crap, Derek, GET UP!! Why isn't he getting up?
Closeup on bullet wound to the head...yeah, he's DEAD?! WTF?I

I'm personally hoping for a scene somewhere in season 3 where John sees Derek on the street, grabs onto him in shock and Derek just goes "um...who are you?" cause if he's a different time line Derek he wouldn't remember teen!John. It'd be real easy to bring him back, but I don't know if they will.

No really, somehow I think that would make a great show.
Derek still died like a bitch though. I'll forgive the writers IF they at LEAST show what happened in the DAMNED BASEMENT, in a flashback episode or SOMETHING! I dont need the character to come back to life magically (which would probably be cheesy) but have the actor at least reprise the role to tie up the characters loose ends via flashbacks, please. This is by far the best turnaround on a thread, ever...well maybe just a thread started by me. I can't stop laughing! Maybe it's shock, sleep deprivation or there are some really great comedy writers just waiting to be discovered on this wiki. I say we pool our resources and write the most ludicrous plot that we can think of and submit it to the writing staff.
I still think that the last 3 minutes of the season finale should be Sarah & Weaver meeting face to face, they start a dialogue and are interrupted mid-sentence with a Rick Roll. Just like that, the video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" comes on and roll credits.

Im more concerned that they ruined a valuable character asset. Derek was a goldmine of future stories connecting to John. More than that, he never had a fully developed character. Trust me, Friedman's going to screw Cameron over next week, leaving John alone just like Thomas Dekker said.
Friedman said it in his blog, he's burning down the frakkin' barn.
He knew the show was dead in the water, and decided to show his contempt for the fans by blowing everything to hell.
I just hope that stupid bitch Sarah gets waxed by Weaver before the end of next week's episode. I was hoping John would give her more than a dirty look this week for splitting up the team and getting Charley killed by not realizing that she had a frickin' transmitter in her tit!

That's not exactly what I meant. :|
I'm all for more Jameron, but the death of Derek was not the price that was necessary to pay for it. There are a great many things they could potentially fill the void of Derek's screen time with, but I wouldn't make any bets on it being more Jameron interaction. I would have liked to think that that would come on its own, as the story winds down at the start of Season 3. Less Derek =/= more Jameron.

There isn't going to be any more Jameron except in fan fic! It's over. Friedman killed the show by killing off the characters that made the show worth watching, if at all. Next week he'll screw over Cameron just to piss the fans off. He said as much at WonderCon - he wants the fans pissed if there isn't a season three - and he KNEW at WonderCon there will NOT BE a season three! So he's just screwing with the fans. it was also a good way to shock the audince , it shocked me, I thought well he is just wounded, and then they show the head wound , and I was like wow, he is dead.
For S-3 if we get it derek and who knows, who else dont fit into the story.
if your a big derek fan then yeah you have right to be pissed, cause nothing glorius about it. but it is a done deal, one ep left try to enjopy it, no telling who dies in it.

"There isn't going to be any more Jameron except in fan fic! All that guff at the end of WonderCon about how he "loves and respects you all for caring about the show" was so much ruminant evacuation.
"
Please stop. No-one listens to you anymore since you became a prophet of doom. Also, you never stop bashing Josh Freedman, which is not cool. He made this show, so maybe you should consider not second guessing him for once.
BTW, if you hate this show so much and think it has no future, why do you always post here?

That's right. It's fine that he dies an irrelevant death because he was only a supporting act. The glorious death, obviously, should be given to Cameron.

I'll vote a big fat no on killing off Cameron. She is the third tent pole in what keeps this show afloat, which is why she has been part of the main cast since the beginning. Without her, the family dynamic of the Connors is not complete.
Derek's death did exactly what it was supposed to. It pissed us off and made us sad, which is how John feels right now, and thus we're meant to as well. John LOSES his best soldiers, and not all of them get the privilege of going down guns blazing. Think of all the US soldiers who died from roadside bombs in Iraq. None of them got to die taking a bullet for a civilian, but they are still the ones who are paying the high cost of war. My point in all this, is that a "hero's death" is overrated. It's still dying no matter how you put it, and someone is going to miss the person who died.

"He explicitly said that he wants the fans pissed if there isn't a season three - and he KNEW at that point that there won't be a season three. He knew at that point that Fox already told Warner Brothers they aren't picking up the show again. Nick C at TV By The Numbers is undoubtedly correct that the decision has already been made. Josh had to know that at WonderCon despite all his nonsense about being "ratings challenged". That was a flat out lie.
"
Seriously, stop the Josh bashing and all the doom saying, it's getting really annoying, and people don't care. It's like listening to a broken record.
Think about the tripe you're spouting; why would Josh deliberately sabotage HIS OWN show? Why would he not care? If it were true, he'd never work in TV or film again. WHY would he want fans pissed off is there were no Season 3? If that part is true, maybe it's because he wants fans to demand a Season 3. Fan response helped secure the back 9, hence why WB sent a thank you to the fans.
Yes, the show has had problems, a lot of shows do during their second seasons; they try out new material and themes. Some of it works, some don't. (X Files is an example of this. They also had poor rating in second season, but were renewed and we all know how successful the show became). The back 9 has been pretty damn good IMHO, the 3 Sarah centric episodes weren't well received, (I liked them), but since then the ratings have gone up and the episodes have been kick ass.
Please stop the constant negativity and Josh bashing; if you hate it that much, don't watch the show (unless you have a Nielsen, then you damn well better watch!) Why bother posting if all you're going to do is rant about how dead you think the show is and how you hate Josh Friedman. We get it, you don't have to carry on. Some of us - many of us, I believe - think different.

I only said that because of the likelihood that next week is the final episode. Obviously for me: No Cameron, me no watch.

Not sure where you got your intel from, but apparently you're right about the show being canceled. Just found out myself a few minutes ago.

Lol....of course I am going to watch the finale....it's probably going to be the most Jameron we are going to get...perhaps forevermore. This is the Cameron asskicking episode we all have been waiting for. WOOT!!!
I meant that if Cameron is going to be destroyed, it should be in the last ever episode, which might be next week's.

My guess is they're cleaning house to make way for the third season, which Dekker said would be like a whole new show.
John's seen he can't have a normal relationship, cannot be normal, and seems to have accepted his fate (in that he has to become *John Connor*. Even if they prevent Judgement Day, he'll still have to be that guy)
He's been manipulated this season, and those responsible are gone (Riley and Jesse)
He's learned that people die for him, and he'll lose those he loves (Charley and Derek) and also, in losing Derek, he's lost a hardened veteran and tough ally, which means John will have to pick up the slack and get more involved in the fighting. One less person fighting for him, Derek was "the man" of the family, now John will have to fulfill that role.
Also, although Derek was an awesome character, I think (in hindsight now) that maybe he'd run his course. He fought for John (now John will have to fight for himself) he was there to clash with Cameron, but seemed to have buried the hatchet, if only a little, after last week. There wasn't really a huge amount for him left. We saw his past and his relationship with Jess. The only thing I can think of that was left was exactly what happened in the basement in the future.
Plus; those who wanted the family dynamic back, I think will get it in Season 3. It's back to the 3 characters; John, Cameron, Sarah. Full circle, maybe?

Was that a no-no? I wasn't aware of that. It's not a spoiler for the finale, just free exchange of information. I see people posting links to spoiler sites on here all the time, so I didn't think this was against the rules. If it is, accept my apology and I'll just wait for the official news to come out.

You know what, I just read some comments earlier. There is a tvbythenumbers person posting in this thread. Anytime he comes on this board, all he does is criticize the show. It's fine if hes critiquing the episode, but all he does is say how he's right and everyone else is wrong. There is a word for that: Troll. The mods have asked people to stop stirring negativity especially about cancellation and renewal and thats all he ever does. The board isn't meant to just trash the show 24/7.

Probably. I really wonder how they would do that though, after making such a big deal of the supposed necessity of splitting them up in this season. Not saying it couldn't be done, just that I'm curious how they would accomplish it.

They killed him off because he has signed up for a new tv show.
expect most of the cast to be in shows or movies ....
we will still see them but not on TSCC ... :(
they should have made TSCC a few years after T2 then we would have had mor seasons .... blame the death of TSCC on the T4 movie.

"I don't watch for just one character ~ but I am sorry, that was not right!
I would rather it had been Sarah*#@!"
As much as John needs his mother, she is holding him back now when he should be coming into his own. Derek's character was the one bringing that out in him. Derek was the one teaching John to be a soldier ... to think for himself ... to be the Leader of Mankind. So if anyone major had to go, it should have been Sarah, not Derek.

You all realize that the spoilers at Wonder Con contained clips from all of these shows. Meaning they were all written and mostly filmed before Wonder Con - which was way before most of the ratings even came out for the back nine eps.
Getting all that film together and edited to the Wonder Con spoiler clip takes a hell of a lot of time.
This show was plotted out way in advance of even the Friday night shift.
Believe me, Josh had no idea if the show was canceled at that point. Or even if it is now.
Fox hasn't made any formal announcement. Everything, and I mean everything is speculation.
Richard Hack has no idea what he's talking about. Not that it even needs to be said.

I think people aren't looking who Sarah Connor is. In the future she is called a legend, precisely because she teaches John what he needs to know to be a future leader. This is canon in T1 and T2 and I dont know if the word 'legend" was mentioned in TSCC, but the show is named after her, so I kinda think its about her.
Sarah teaches John leadership. And remember, the guy's still 16 years old. I find it inconceivable that a show can kill off the entire compelling cast save 1 or 2 key figures and make it work by adding new & inferior "friends" (btw the last friends we got were Jesse and Riley). Plus, its not what I came to the show to watch. Unlike the people who assumed it was going to be all John and the terminators, I watched knowing full well from the title it was about Sarah. Im gonna feel real cheated if JF doesnt give her an honorable goodbye.
I also suspect that the people who want Sarah to go are none other than Jamerons. It is a most unfortunate development. DISCLAIMER: When I say this, I am not saying Jamerons are not fans of the show or that they dont like terminator, but they are not really fans of terminator lore with drama as a secondary. Instead they are fans of drama with terminator lore secondary. In terminator world, machines are toasters - thats it, they dont feel, they dont do anything but kill or serve humans. All the other sci fi shows have done these humans and robot relationships. The plot lines have been regurgitated over and over always ending with some human and robot hookup. I can understand a momentary lapse of judgement by John because hes a teenager, but for the show to end with him on top of Cameron making half human, half t888 babies is way worse than the worst of T3's ridiculous stuff and a slap in the face to those who expect more of this show. At the same time, I'm pretty sure JF won't do that because they like using new storylines.
