Explaining
Derek, Kilee and Charlie quickly helped Sarah move the lifeless form of Cameron off of John Connor. Sarah pulled her son into her arms. He looked over at the others and said “You guys forget something?” They all laughed and as Charlie looked him over they took Kyle into the shed and got dressed. Kilee then went to Cameron she was now sitting up and running a diagnostic test. Kilee waited until she was finished and Cameron looked up at her “Do you need any help?” “No all systems are functional. I just need some skin replacement.” Kilee nodded “I can grow some from another part of you.” Cameron nodded and got to her feet as Sarah as Charlie helped John up. Kyle and Derek came around Cameron and Derek said “How are you?” to John. Without looking toward his uncle he said “Besides the fact that my throat feel like raw hamburger and I feel like I got hit in the chest by a semi, not half bad.” He said the last as her turned toward Derek. Only then was he aware that his father was leaning on Derek’s shoulder for support. John nodded to him and said to Charlie “Looks like we have another patient for you.” Charlie turned to look at Kyle Derek was doing his best to hold his brother up, but it was obvious that Kyle was slowly losing his ability to stay up right on his own. Kilee went to the other side of Kyle and helped Derek get him in to the house. The others followed as Kilee and Derek eased Kyle down onto the couch. Kilee knelt on front of her friend and looked at him “Okay” she whispered. Kyle tried to smile but it quickly turned into a grimace of pain. “If the kid feels like he got hit by a semi I must have been struck by a whole fleet!” He tried to joke. Kilee smiled and helped him lay down on the couch. Already the front of his shirt was soaked with blood. Though he had stitched up his side in 1984, he had torn them out trying to help the others. She opened his shirt up and her father came to her side. “Here let me.” he said. She moved to Kyle’s head and took hold of his hand as Charlie started to re stitch his wound. Charlie said to Kyle “you did alright out there.” Kyle nodded he didn’t trust himself to speak because of the pain. He passed out from it before Charlie finished. They all went into the kitchen. Both Derek and Kilee stood by the door to keep an eye on Kyle. “He won’t wake any time soon.” Charlie said. The nodded nut still wanted to watch him. Sarah had yet to look at Kyle. Then Kilee turned to look at Charlie “He didn’t know about John, you know.” “What?” he said confused. “Kyle didn’t know that he was John’s father until you told him out there.” she nodded to the front lawn. John looked up at Kilee “He told him?” Kilee nodded yes. Sarah and John exchanged glances. “Well I guess that solves that.” Sarah said. “Not really. You are going to have to talk to him at some point Sarah.” Sarah sighed and looked over at Kilee “I know, I just don’t know what to say to him. I have thought about, fantasized about this moment for so long that now I don’t know what to say.” “Then let me talk to him first when he wakes up.” John said looking around the room, everyone nodded yes to this idea. Then Sarah said that she would look after him while everyone else cleaned up. They went their separate ways to do so.
Charlie handed Sarah a cup of coffee as she sat on the floor looking at Kyle. “So he was your great love. The reason you walked out on me?” “Yes he was my ‘great love’ as you put it, but he is not the reason I left you.” Charlie sighed “Then what is? Do I get an explanation after all this time or not?” Sarah looked up at him. He had sat in the chair beside her. “It was John, and his destiny and all of this. I didn’t want to ruin your life with my problems.” “That is what marriage is Sarah.” he leaned forward, closer to her. “You combine your problems and find a way to work them out.” Sarah snorted “You think you could have worked this out?” she gestured around including everyone and everything around her. Charlie laughed a short humorless sound. “Maybe not, I know not back then I wouldn’t have been able to understand any of this.” “You barely understand it know. I have lived this ever since I meet this man.” She indicated Kyle’s unconscious form. “I can’t say that I never dreamt of a normal life now and again, but that was taken from me so long ago that keeping John alive and safe has been my only concern. I have little time or energy for anything else. My time with you was a lull in the storm. Then Cameron came and We ended up here.” She took a sip of her coffee. It was getting late in the day and the others decided that they needed sleep more that food and went to bed. Charlie went home and Cameron was left to guard Kyle during the night. It was a few hours before dawn when the entire house was woken up by terrible screams. Only two people knew what they where. Kilee and Derek rushed out of their room to get to Kyle. John and Sarah followed quickly behind. Cameron was trying to hold Kyle down as gently as possible while telling him that he would rip his stitches again if he didn’t. Kilee pushed her gently aside and wrapped her arms around Kyle. She started to sing that old Spanish lullaby as Derek sat down by Kyle’s feet to help hold him onto the couch. Kilee could not be heard over Kyle’s screams, John and Sarah looked at each other. They both made the silent decision and walked into the room together singing the same song. First Kyle stopped screaming. Then slowly his body relaxed into Kilee’s arms. When he was calm she carefully placed him back on the couch. Kyle was a sleep again. Kilee looked up to John and Sarah. “Thank you. You might as well go back to bed.” she didn’t bother telling Derek for she knew that he, like her would remain at Kyle’s side until morning. Sarah walked into the kitchen and made coffee for everyone as John sat down on the floor beside Cameron. They sat for hours watching over the sleeping Kyle. They had all fallen asleep in various positions all over the living room and Kyle couldn’t help but laugh a little at the site he woke up to. Kilee was closest to him on the floor holding his hand, Derek had his arm draped over her waist curled up behind her, Kyle wondered if he would ever get used to that, Sarah was in the chair and John was asleep at her feet. Cameron sat on the floor starring at him. “Good morning” he said to the machine. At the sound of his voice the others started to wake. Kilee sat up and hugged him. He grinned at her and held her tightly “I never thought I would see you again.” he whispered into her hair. “It’s good to be seen old friend.” He pushed her back “Hey I’m not that old.” They laughed as Derek sat up beside them “your looking better.” Kyle smiled at his brother “I’m sorry I left you like that. I saw Kilee go into that building alone. I had to go.” Derek knew what he was referring to and just waved it away. Sarah had gotten up silently and went into the kitchen. She came back with coffee for everyone. Kyle had sat up completely on the couch and Sarah handed him a mug first. Kyle took it making sure their hands touched. He was pleased to see her blush at this. John moved on the floor and attracted Kyle’s attention. He couldn’t believe that he never noticed the similarities between them before. Others back home had teased him about acting like John Connor, but Kyle had just shrugged it off. He could have been compared to worst. But know watching the boy move, he saw some of his own movements in him. Without noticing the others he said to John “We need to talk.” John looked stunned at first. It was the first thing that his father had ever said to him. He nodded. Kilee stood “I guess that is our cue to go get breakfast. Sarah Cameron come on we will go get it from that restaurant down town and bring some back for these guys. The all went to get dressed and then left waving good by to the two in the living room. Kilee called Charlie and told him to meet them at the restaurant.
Once everyone was gone Kyle turned to John, but it was the boy who spoke first. “Derek and I talked about this before they went back for you. He said that you are only like ten years older than me now. I don’t expect you to be a father you know.. To me or anything.” he said the last looking at his hands. “Well that’s good because I would probably suck at it. I am however pretty good at being friends. How about we start there and leave this father son thing for another time.” John looked at him surprised and smiled “sounds good to me.” The two then just talked, about what they liked, what they hated. About Derek and Kilee “I always hoped that she would get over him, I mean he is a great guy, but he is my brother and she is like a sister to me. It just blows my mind.” Kyle said. “Well if they get married then she would be your sister. “ Kyle laughed “I don’t know if he is the marring kind.” “What about her?” Kyle sighed and looked away. “Kilee has had a lot of bad luck in her life. I doubt if she could sustain relationship for long. She is way to damaged.” “Have you noticed Derek lately talk about damaged” John said Kyle laughed. They continued to talk until the others came back. Charlie looked Kyle over again and Kilee told Kyle that he was her father. Kyle took a new interest in him, because Kilee told him about her father and Sarah. They were going to have a lot to deal with in the not to distant future, they all had their problems. But for know they were together, no terminators in site and they could heel once again.
