(Excerpted from another thread)

How would I start the TSCC story after being given T1 and T2 as a base backstory?

At the end of T2, Skynet is stopped and there are no terminators. But Sarah is a fugitive from the law.

Here's what I saw. How would you have done it?

The FBI is looking for them, so we need an Ellison.

If we want John to be 15, it must be 1999. Where would Sarah live? Like a witness protection plan participant, she would be in a small town out in the hinterlands. And in a small town, John would be a lower profile as just another student in school versus being home schooled and having to explain it all the time.

And Sarah is still youngish and pretty, so she has a boyfriend, Charley.

We need a bad terminator, Cromartie. As in T1 and T2, Skynet sends only one. And we need a good terminator, Cameron. Let her be a cute female.

We want the bad terminator to start chasing Sarah and John as early as possible, and the good terminator needs to be there to save them. They have to fight, spectacularly with guns and property destruction.

For cost and product placement, it would be better to have the show be set in the 2007 world, so we need a time jump from 1999. We get to show everyone naked.

There needs to be a way for the bad terminator to continue its pursuit despite the time jump by Sarah and John. The bad terminator must continue as a real threat for some number of episodes beyond the time jump.

And Ellison would represent the continuing threat of being discovered and chased by the FBI.

And there you have the pilot. The rest of Season 1 then would derive from the set up from the pilot.

Sarah resolves to find Skynet and “stop it” upfront, and this is her primary goal going beyond the pilot.

She succeeds when she burns the first Turk. This would be the end of the story except if the series is renewed, in which case we need to introduce Turk 2.

Oh, one last addition. To kick off the series with as big a bang as possible, we need to begin the pilot with Sarah and John being put at risk by both the police and a terminator. But since it doesn’t fit with the story, we’ll make it a throwaway dream sequence.

Lemme play devil's advocate.

Why not a horror/chase format instead?

Start the pilot with John and Sarah eating at a restaurant and a big body builder type guy walks in and starts shooting at them, missing of course.

They run and he chases them. They get in a car and so does he. The car chase ends in a crash, and they get out and start running and he chases them on foot. They run into a crowd, maybe a shopping mall, and he loses them as they duck and scuttle away. But when they go home to pack their guns to run, he reacquires them there. They shoot him but he keeps coming and they see he is a terminator. Then they run some more.

The story would be a virtually continuous chase, like T1. T1 was a handful of scenes to set up the story and then it was all chase. For my version of TSCC, I don't have to waste so much time setting up the story cuz everybody knows it already. So I just have more chase.

Every week there would be a foot chase and a car chase and a gunfight. In the meantime, Sarah can figure out how the terminator found them in the restaurant and she needs to figure out how to find the new Skynet. Sorta like she's chasing Skynet while the terminator is chasing her (a la T2).

There would be no high school, no emo teen complaining, no Riley and Jesse, no John Henry and Weaver, no Charley. I would have an Ellison as a minor character just to keep the cops involved.

And somewhere a few episodes down the road, I would have Cameron show up played by Summer Glau, but have her be a weak terminator who could not fight the bad terminator one-on-one. So Cameron would contribute to John and Sarah with strategic pointers and as a lookout at night, etc.

I could have a Derek show up, too, and be a nice complement to Cameron.

Just a "modest proposal." Do ya think it would get too tiring? Boring after a few eps?

My bet is into "15 posts will be enough, for the first phase". :)

Stupid question: why The Retard Of Mankind should have exactly 15 years? Why not 19?

Good question!

I don't have a good answer. Perhaps Josh wanted to show John Connor in his mid-teens. This would let him play up the usual teen neuroses like self-centeredness, whining and complaining, emo habits, inability or refusal to accept more responsibility, self-indulgence, etc.

I mean, an 18 or 19 year old might be too mature for this kind of stuff, and a 12 or 13 year old might still be too much of a mama's boy to show these characteristics.

But why would Josh want to show these characteristics? They are a turn off to many viewers -- they sure turned *me* off ! Did he view this as an artistic challenge? -- to show this aspect of American youth? Yeuch!

Maybe Josh hoped to show John's transition from these characteristics into becoming a mature and credible leader. Certainly, John seemed to move in that direction near the end of Season 2. But not enough, in my opinion. Far from enough.
